ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES
- Philippines is pronounced [fili-peenz.]
- The Philippines are a group of over 7,000 tropical islands located in southeastern Asia between South China and the Philippine Sea.
- Due to the close proximity of these islands to the equator it is prone to typhoons and earthquakes.
- Currently, almost 33% of their population lives below the poverty line. Without access to foreign markets, filipino residents are forced to try and sell their crafts to tourists for a very low wage.
ABOUT OUR PARTNERSHIP
This group is changing lives in the Philippines by helping them develop skills to sell their products to the world! These artisans are benefitting through micro-financing, technical training, product development assistance and special incentives for their quality craftsmanship. They now have this steady income to help the provide for their families.
THE ARTISANS: GRACE
Grace applied for a job with our artisan group in the Philippines that creates our Capiz Earrings. She underestimated the skill required working with capiz, but was determined to learn. Grace knew that, “with determination, nothing is impossible.” She soon overcame her obstacles and has now been with the group for over 13 years. She has advanced in her position and receives legal benefits, training seminars, group retreats, and loans so she can send her children to school.
Grace’s fortitude has paid off; she has earned enough money through creating earrings to purchase the home and lot where her family is living, and her 6 children are pursuing their studies. She is so thankful for the opportunities she has been given and hopes for more work so the families there can continue to prosper.
